Recent repairs: what broke and how we fixed it
Real furnace jobs from the past season. If you smell gas, shut off the supply at the valve and call from outside the house.
| Problem | City | Cause | What we did |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blower won’t start | Pittsburg | Failed blower motor start device | Replaced the start device. The furnace is old, so we recommended planning a replacement |
| Furnace won’t light | Oakland | Failed ignition control and ignition module on a 30-year-old furnace | Replaced both parts, cleaned the flame sensor and blower, adjusted the gas valve |
| Furnace won’t light | Lafayette | Failed ignition control | Replaced the ignition control and serviced the furnace |
| No heat, controls dead | Mill Valley | Failed control board and control transformer | Replaced the board and transformer, checked the full heating cycle |
| Electrical fault at the blower | Concord | Bad electrical connection at the blower motor | Took out the control board and blower, repaired the connection, cleaned the blower assembly |
| Exhaust system fault | Tiburon | Failed draft inducer | Repaired the exhaust and replaced the draft inducer assembly |

“Once I’ve got the furnace open for a repair, I’ll clean the flame sensor and the blower and check the gas valve if they need it. It takes a few extra minutes and can save you another call in January”

Furnace repair questions
Do you offer same-day furnace repair?
It depends on the shedule of our technician, so we can’t say that same-day is available always. We work 7am–7pm and same-day slots are sometimes available across Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin counties. The first cold week of the season fills up fast, so call early.
Is a repair on an old furnace covered by warranty?
Our warranty covers the parts we install and the work we do. On an older furnace we can’t warranty the original components, such as the heat exchanger, blower motor or gas valve, because they can fail on their own at any time.
Which furnace brands do you repair?
All of them. We install mainly Daikin and Goodman, but we repair every brand — Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, Trane, Rheem, American Standard and older units. If a part is discontinued, we tell you and lay out the options.
What is a cracked heat exchanger, and can it be fixed?
The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air you breathe. A crack can let carbon monoxide into the airflow. It cannot be repaired. We inspect it on every furnace we service, and if it is cracked we shut the unit down and discuss replacement.
