Which system fits your home
It mostly comes down to whether the house already has ducts.
Ducts and an old gas furnace
Typical of postwar homes, as in Walnut Creek. Options: a new gas furnace, a ducted heat pump, or a dual-fuel system with both.
No ductwork
Typical of prewar homes in Berkeley. Ductless mini-split heat pumps heat room by room without running ducts.
Radiators or a boiler
Common in older Marin homes. We don’t work on boilers or radiators, but a ductless heat pump can heat rooms alongside the existing system.
Permits and warranty
Permit and city inspection
In California, replacing a furnace or heat pump requires a permit. On our recent jobs the permit and city inspection line was $1,350 in Moraga and $1,450 in Brentwood.
Warranty up to 12 years
Daikin equipment carries a warranty of up to 12 years. Our recent heat pump replacements included a 3-year labor warranty. Goodman heat pumps get a 10-year parts warranty if registered.
When we’re not the right call
- Boilers, radiators and hydronic heating: plumbing work, outside our C-20 license.
- Air-to-water heat pumps: same reason.
- Homes in San Francisco or the South Bay: we serve the East Bay and Marin County.
