Short answer: repair it, unless the heat exchanger is cracked or the furnace is 25–30 years old. A typical furnace repair from Fuse Service in the East Bay costs around $690, while a new furnace starts from $5,000.
Here’s what both cost and how to tell which one you need.

Problems that are usually worth fixing
When a furnace stops, it’s usually one failed part, and a new part gets it running again:
- Furnace won’t light. Usually a failed ignition control or ignition module, as on our recent jobs in Oakland and Lafayette.
- Blower won’t start. Often the motor’s capacitor (start device), like the one we replaced in Pittsburg.
- Controls are dead, no heat at all. Often the control board or its transformer. In Mill Valley it was both.
- Furnace shuts down with an exhaust fault. Often a failed draft inducer, as on a recent job in Tiburon.
- Electrical fault at the blower. Sometimes just a bad connection. In Concord we repaired it without new parts.
When it’s time to replace
- The heat exchanger is cracked. It can’t be repaired, and a crack can leak CO, a dangerous gas, into your home. If we find one, we shut the furnace down.
- The furnace is 25–30 years old. We see a lot of these in the East Bay, like the 30-year-old furnace we repaired in Oakland. We’ll still fix the part that failed, but our warranty covers only what we install. The rest of the old furnace can still break down.
