Which system fits your home

It mostly comes down to whether the house already has ducts, and what shape they are in.

Ducts and an old gas furnace

Typical of postwar homes, as in Walnut Creek. Options: a new gas furnace with central AC, or a ducted heat pump that heats and cools.

Old or worn ducts

The ducts can be replaced together with the new system. On our recent heat pump jobs, new ductwork added $3,480 to $6,160.

No ductwork

Typical of prewar homes in Berkeley. Ductless mini-split heat pumps heat and cool room by room without running ducts.

Radiators or a boiler

Common in older Marin homes. We repair boilers and radiant heating systems. A ductless mini split can add cooling and extra heat room by room.

Permits and warranty

Permit and city inspection

In California, replacing a furnace, heat pump or air conditioner requires a permit. It isn’t included in the installation prices above and starts from $250.

Warranty up to 12 years

Our recent installations included a 3-year labor warranty. Daikin equipment carries a warranty of up to 12 years. Goodman heat pumps get a 10-year parts warranty if registered.

When we’re not the right call

  • Air-to-water heat pumps: we don’t install them.
  • Removing old ductwork that contains asbestos: this has to be done by an asbestos-certified contractor and isn’t included in our ductwork price.
  • Homes in San Francisco or the South Bay: we serve the East Bay and Marin County.
